Future Energy Leaders Connect with Energy Workforce Leadership

The University of North Carolina’s Kenan-Flagler MBA Energy Club students hosted their annual “Energy Trek” through Houston, including a visit to Energy Workforce. Presidents Tim Tarpley and Molly Determan provided policy and workforce updates, followed by a fireside chat between Advisory Board Members Bruce Miller, SLB and Chris Olson, Weatherford, who discussed domestic and international government affairs.

Tarpley briefed attendees on energy policy, highlighting current Congressional priorities around permitting reform and how the Administration’s actions are creating new opportunities for energy service companies. Determan shared workforce trends, emphasizing how digitalization, evolving skill sets, and changing talent practices are shaping the energy workforce.

During their discussion, Miller and Olson shared insights on how their companies are navigating current market dynamics and the policies influencing their operations. They answered student questions on new energy initiatives, international trade, and the growing global demand for power.

Organized by Dan Domeracki, Associate Director of the Energy Center, the annual Energy Trek brings about 20 first- and second-year MBA students to Houston to meet with a range of energy-focused organizations—from think tanks to startups to private industry. A former Energy Workforce Board Chair, Domeracki has facilitated these visits since joining UNC in 2019.
